As another birthday of mine creeps up on me, and I realise that the years are really starting to fly, I have decided to step completely out of my comfort zone and take on the practise of Bikram Yoga. Now, unlike the lovely Miss Elizabeth Gilbert in 'Eat, Pray, Love,' my chances of being able to drop everything and jet set around the world are almost (ok, definitely) close to zero; so, in an attempt to put the spice back into my life and re-discover who I really am, I have opted for the more realistic choice of starting something new.
Bikram Yoga is a form of "hot yoga," invented by Bikram Choudbury in the 1970s. You practise 26 postures and 2 breathing excercises in a room heated to around 40 degrees. This may sound crazy and bizarre, but each movement and each posture is performed in a bid to better your inner health and well-being. Each posture is repeated twice to increase muscular flexibility and lung capacity as well as rid the body of any stress or tension.
Having started this practice only 1 week ago (and being a journalism student), I feel like this journey I'm going on needs to be recorded. I am determined to learn more about this form of yoga and to achieve some sort of balance in my life. This journey will be intense, and I hope that it will offer you some insight into your own life and the options that you have for change.
Namaste.
